Formada em 1965 em Los Angeles, após um encontro de estudantes de cinema da Universidade da Califórnia, a legendária banda The Doors era composta por Jim Morrison nos vocais, Ray Manzarek nos teclados, Robby Krieger na guitarra e John Densmore na bateria. O nome da banda foi tirado do livro "The Doors of Perception", de Aldous Huxley, e suas músicas continham letras, a maioria delas escritas por Jim Morrison, eram vistas como o retrato da juventude.

Com o estilo messiânico de Morrison, a mistura da batida jazzística de Densmore, o bailado das teclas de Manzarek (que, com a mão esquerda, tocava as partes que deveriam ser tocadas pelo baixo) e a guitarra de Krieger, com suas influências do flamenco, da música indiana, blues e da guitarra clássica, a banda trazia para o Pop um som original e de estilo inconfundível.
